How to Know When a Disposable Vape is Empty? [Expert's Tips]

April 24, 2023

Disposable vapes are understandably popular. They provide great taste and are often very affordable. The only real issue is that, as their name suggests, they don't last forever. At some point, you're going to have to purchase a replacement.

If you're new to using disposable vapes, you might struggle to identify when it starts running low on juice. It isn't immediately obvious, but thankfully, there are some tell-tale signs you can follow. Let's walk you through them.

Vapour Tastes Burnt or Unpleasant

One of the most appealing factors of vaping is the brilliant flavours available. There's something for everybody on the market, from minty fresh to bubbly and sweet. It's typically noticeable when that flavour starts to turn a little sour; this is one of the first signs that a vape that's on its way out.

There are two significant changes you may start to notice if your vape is running on an empty tank. The first is that the flavour might taste a little burnt or charred. This is because the atomizer reaches a higher temperature with nothing to consume. Second, you may notice a metallic hint to your vapour flavour. Again, this is due to the continuous burning of an empty tank.

Vapour Has No Flavour

In some instances, your vapour clouds may lose all flavour completely. It isn't charred, burnt, or metallic, and it isn't tasty. It just tastes like nothing. This is a surefire sign, as it demonstrates that no more flavoured liquid evaporates to produce the taste you're used to.

If you notice this, you need to replace your vape as soon as possible. Besides the fact that using a flavourless vape is essentially pointless, it could actually be dangerous. You could be inhaling harmful smoke from the burnt wick inside.

No Vapour Production

The final vapour-related clue that your vape is running on empty is that no clouds are produced. Of course, cloud size depends on the size and brand of the vape. The larger the vape, the bigger the cloud, and disposable vapes aren't often known for their massive cloud production.

However, even if massive clouds aren't your norm, you will still notice when they start to thin out. A near-empty vape will continuously produce thinner and thinner clouds until they eventually disappear entirely. Once this happens, you know you're working with an almost empty vape, and it's time to make a quick replacement. Even if you aren't interested in cloud chasing, thin clouds could lead to a burnt wick, which is the last thing you want to inhale.

Indicator Light Begins to Flash

Some vapes handily come with a light indicator feature that shows when your vape is nearing the end of its tank. This usually looks like an LED light but could look different depending on your brand and device type. Check the accompanying manual that came when you purchased your vape for confirmation.

Rechargeable vapes often have similar lights to indicate that the device needs charging. Some disposable vapes can't be recharged, so you'll know that when the lights start flashing, it's time for a replacement. You will notice this the most right after you've taken a hit, so pay attention to any flashing lights.

Know the Difference Between A Dead Battery and Empty Vape

This is arguably one of the most challenging things to discern when dealing with disposable vapes, but you must understand the difference. Sometimes, your vape isn't empty at all; it might have a faulty or dead battery inside. Thankfully, there is an easy way to tell: temperature.

If your device feels warm when you take a hit, the battery still powers the coil to generate heat. You would then use the heat to evaporate the remaining e-liquid inside. If your device gets warm, but there's no vapour production, you can take it as a solid clue that your vape is empty.

If your disposable vape doesn't get warm, that's an indicator that your battery is dead. At that point, it doesn't matter whether there is e-liquid inside or not, as you have no way of heating it to produce vapour. Your best bet is to dispose of it and find a replacement, as it could be a fault inside the device's circuitry.
